Digital 3D scans instead of messy impressions
At Orthos Boutique Smiles in Southlake, TX, we use a digital 3D scanner to capture the shape of your teeth and bite. In place of traditional impression trays and goopy material, a handheld scanner builds a detailed 3D model of your smile on a screen. Dr. Luu uses that model to plan your treatment and to design your custom appliances.
What to expect during a digital scan
The scanner is a small, handheld wand that moves gently over your teeth. As it moves, the 3D model builds on the screen, so you can see what Dr. Luu sees. You do not need to bite into any material, and the scan is non-invasive.
Why digital scans matter for your treatment
A scan is the starting point for your care, and it supports the treatment options we offer.
- A more pleasant experience. There are no impression trays or materials to bite into. In our experience, patients appreciate having a digital scan instead of a traditional impression.
- A clear picture for planning. The 3D model lets Dr. Luu study your teeth and bite as he plans your treatment, and lets you see the plan too.
- Custom appliances and retainers. We use scans to design and make personalized treatments such as InSmile™ Braces, LightForce custom braces, clear aligners, other appliances, and retainers. In our experience, the precision of a digital scan helps these fit well.
Frequently asked questions about digital scans
Here are answers to common questions about digital scanning:
Do braces and aligners still need molds?
We use a digital 3D scan in place of traditional impressions for treatment planning. Dr. Luu will let you know if any other records are needed for your care.
Is a digital scan safe?
Digital scanners capture images of your teeth using visible light, not X-rays. Dr. Luu will tell you if you need X-rays or other records as part of your treatment.
Does a digital scan replace X-rays?
No. A scan shows the surfaces of your teeth and bite, while X-rays show what is beneath the surface. Dr. Luu will recommend the records you need.
How long does a scan take?
The scan itself is quick. The exact time depends on your mouth and on what Dr. Luu is planning, and we will let you know what to expect at your visit.
